This year, for UBC’s sixth annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, more than 100 UBC graduate student researchers put hours of work into practicing and honing their presentations to compete in faculty and department organized heats over 4 weeks of competition. The audience that assembled in the Graduate Student Centre Ballroom for yesterday’s semi-finals were treated to 28 of those outstanding 3-minute research presentations.
The top ten presenters are moving on to the Thursday, March 10th final – 4:30-6:00 PM at the Graduate Student Centre Ballroom. Here are the semi-final winners:
Semi-Final 1:
First place: Amin Nouri, PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering, The Curious Case of Benjamin’s Bubble (Prof. David Wilkinson)
Second place and People’s choice: Diana Canals, MSc in Medical Genetics, The role of podocalyxin in cancer metastasis (Dr. Kelly McNagny)
Third place: M’Beth Schoenfeld, MASc in Biomedical Engineering, Cervical Spine Injuries in Vehicle Rollovers (Drs. Peter Cripton & Gunter Siegmund)
Honourable mention: Kelsey Huus, PhD in Microbiology and Immunology, How gut bacteria contribute to malnutrition (Dr. B. Brett Finlay)
Honourable mention: Anne-Mareike Chu, MSc in Resource Management and Environmental Studies, Smart Buildings – Closing the Energy Gap in Green Buildings (Dr. John Robinson)

UBC’s first place finisher will advance to a regional competition at UBC-Okanagan on April 29th. Top finishers from that competition will go on to contend for national honours in a virtual completion sponsored by the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS)
