3MT at UBC

3MT™ (Three Minute Thesis) is a competition that challenges graduate students to hone their communications and presentation skills by clearly and powerfully articulating their research into a 3 minute oration to a general audience.

Can’t be done? Can’t see the point? Can’t be bothered?

Well way down south the folks at 33 participating graduate schools in Australia and New Zealand might beg to differ. They all took part in 3MT™ 2010, which in turn inspired the Faculty of Graduate Studies at University of British Columbia to take the lead in organizing our own inaugural competition in the spring of 2011.

It went well. It was useful. It was fun. It was informative. Then came 2012 and 2013 and we did it all over again! We had Faculty heats and semi-final heats and then a final and winners. There were rules and judges. There were audiences. There was a buzzer. And yes, there were prizes.

The University of British Columbia 3MT™ event is based on the competition format first developed by the University of Queensland. All Faculties at UBC Vancouver are invited to organize heats for graduate students with top finishers advancing to university wide semi-final and final heats.

Potential sponsors and judges are invited to contact Jacqui Brinkman at the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Faculty and staff wanting to be involved in organizing Faculty heats should contact Lina Yu at Grad Studies.

Members of the media should contact the Grad Studies Communications Manager, Carolynne Ciceri.

Grad students hoping to participate should start practicing!
